Farm Animals, Caring for our Heritage

American Livestock Breeds Conservancy: A great resource on rare “heritage” breeds of farm animals, including many that we have at Venetucci Farm.

American Suffolk Horse Association: Background information on a heritage breed of horse that we have at Venetucci. Ayla is a Suffolk Punch horse.

Footsteps Farm - Tamworth Hogs Page: A succinct summary about the kind of pigs we raise at Venetucci Farm. This rare heritage breed is hardy and a good forager, which makes it a great fit for our farm.

Henderson’s Handy-Dandy Chicken Chart: A fun guide to the many varieties of chickens out there including various characteristics.

Saving Seeds

Seed Savers Exchange: This Iowa non-profit has been involved in keeping heirloom seed varieties viable for over 30 years. A great source for seeds and information.

Global Crop Diversity Trust: A fascinating site with information about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Native Seeds/ S E A R C H: This seed bank focuses more on the southwest. It has active programs supporting local Native American communities, who in many cases developed these varieties of seeds.

Vermicomposting Directions: This brochure put out by the City of Denver has all the information you need to set up your own worm composting bin.

Composting Guide: The City of Sacramento created this simple guide to backyard composting.

Pikes Peak Urban Gardens (PPUG): Our friends at PPUG not only continue to help create community gardens, but their site is full of great tips including tips on composting. Check out their Garden Tips page.

Good Bugs, Bad Bugs and Beyond Bugs

Beneficial Insects 101: This site has lot of interesting information about tackling the world of insects in the garden.

Journey North’s Monarch Tracking Project: An incredible project that can involve classrooms in tracking the amazing migration of the Monarch Butterfly. These butterflies stop by for a rest at Venetucci Farm and Pinello Ranch.

Butterfly Pavilion: This is not only a fun place to visit to learn about all types of arthropods, but they also have information on creating your own butterfly garden.

Building a Toad House: If you are lucky enough to have toads visit your garden, like we do at Venetucci Farm, why not create a simple toad home. Great natural insect control.
